As spring is slowly creeping in, you may begin to feel your body and mind are in need of a good refresh button. As we spring clean our homes, its time for us to also begin thinking about spring cleaning our bodies. Right now is the perfect time to change from winter warming foods to food that promotes detoxification in our bodies and minds….especially after the holiday festivities! Here are some of our tips for a healthy and fresh start to the Spring Season:

1. Get that juicer out and get those juices flowing!

Its known that the enzymes in fresh vegetable juices provide extra nutrients that help your body eliminate toxins especially after the cold winter months. Aim to include at least 1 leafy green juice per day. If you can, try to include one or more of the following greens into your juices as they are particularly cleansing: parsley, beets, kale, chard, spinach, bok choy, and arugula.

2. Start Your Morning with a lemon water flush or a herbal cleansing tea.

The perfect way to stimulate a cleansing effect in our bodies is by filling yourselves with healthy and hydrating fluids. Try to start the day with a glass of water with a freshly squeezed lemon or even a dash of cayenne pepper (Mark’s favourite) to stimulate the liver. Or mix it with a spoonful of apple cider vinegar to stimulate your system. As for herbal teas, there are many varieties of incredible cleansing and detoxifying teas. Our favourites are dandelion, ginger-lemon, mint, and Peru’s traditional Muna tea.

3. Consider a gentle pre-made “Cleanse” of your choice.

Our favourite go to cleanse these days is the Wild Rose Cleanse. It is a 12-Day Cleanse that makes you feel like a brand new you by the end of it. It is simply a scheduled intake of herbal pills, and drops along with a diet plan that allows you to eliminate toxins and all processed and unhealthy foods from your diet. The Wild Rose Herbal D-Tox provides a complete multi-system detoxification of the colon and kidneys; acts on the urinary tract and the gastro-intestinal system, and detoxifies the liver. 4. Include these fresh veggies and fruits to aid with stomach bloating.

Bloating happens to the best of us and it’s never fun. A lot of the times a stressful environment or certain lifestyle habits can cause bloating such as overeating, eating too much raw foods, or just eating on the go while rushing for the next appointment or meeting. Firstly, become mindful of any habits you are promoting that are causing more stress and anxiety in your life. Eat mindfully in a calm, peaceful environment if possible. Give yourself 15 or more minutes to truly enjoy the food you are fuelling yourself with, taking time to chew and appreciate the flavours and taste. Try including some of the following foods that will ease any tummy and intestinal discomfort: cucumber, bananas, papaya, asparagus, ginger, or chamomile.

5. Shop local and eat seasonal produce if possible!

The local store or your local farmers market are more likely to have local and seasonal produce. Look for the fruits and vegetables that have been grown in organic rich soil, packed full of all the micronutrients we need. Choose organic when possible, and visit as many farmers market to support your local communities!

6. Promote The Elimination Process.

I know this is an awkward subject to discuss but we all know that one of the best ways to eliminate toxins out of our bodies is through healthy bowel movements. Here are some easy tips to help you on your journey:

– Add ground flaxseed to smoothies or your meals to help with lubrication.

–  Sit on the loo with your knees higher than your hips. It will help the bowel process more easily.

–  Eat lots of pre-biotic foods (such as tomatoes, onions garlic, spinach, bananas, chickpeas, lentils, kale) and pro-biotics which are found in sourdough breads, kombucha, sauerkraut.

So there you have it. Enjoy the warmer weather, the birth of new flowers, and the awakening of Mother Earth.

Happy Spring! XO
